Abstract

International data flows underpin the global digital economy and fuel technological innovation. Geopolitical forces, combined with multidimensional interests such as security, safety and sovereignty, have made navigating applicable privacy rules for international data flows more complex and more consequential. This panel will discuss how global developments are impacting international data flows policy and practice, and vice versa.

- The issue of international data flows has become more important and more complex. How and why are data flows important to your organization, technology, and the economy more broadly?

- At the same time, international data flows have grown more multidimensional in terms of their complexity. What are some of the sources of the uncertainty, complexity, and challenge in navigating and implementing international data flows? Are policy and political interventions helping or compounding challenges? How is the focus on sovereignty and competitiveness impacting these issues?

- What are some practical measures you recommend for professionals following and working on international data transfer policies?

- What do you hope the future state of international data transfers will be and what do you predict will be the key developments over the next few months and years? What will ‘good’ look like?
